SCULPTORS Colin Caffell and Tom Leaper have been making last minute finishing touches to their designs for the proposed St Just and Pendeen Miner's Statue before the final voting dates.

Residents, campaigners and supporters are expected to be out in force to vote for 'the people's favourite' design and excitement is growing about the eventual location and citing of the statue.

Bernard Rees, chairman of the St Just & District Trust who is leading the campaign said: "I am delighted by the huge amount of support that this voting process is being given.

Wonderful

"The two finalists have produced wonderful designs and we are now only a matter of days away from knowing which one is the most popular.

"It is important that we all remember the purpose of this campaign is to erect a miner's statue that will be a long overdue memorial to the many brave and dedicated mineworkers who lost their lives or suffered terrible illnesses during the course of their work.

"The St Just and Pendeen community is extremely proud of its mining heritage, but at the same time they are painfully aware of the price so many families paid for being part of that mining industry. The statue will be a fitting tribute, and become a focal point for residents and visitors alike." The first final public voting session takes place on Saturday, July 4, at the Centre, Pendeen from 10am to 1pm. The second vote is on Saturday, July 11, from 11am to 2pm at the RBL, St Just.
