YOU might say the voices of choir members from Helston and Redruth Baptist churches were a tad deeper than usual at their latest session.

You could also say that they were mining a rich vein of material – and you'd be right on both counts.

The choir members were at (or should that be down) Poldark Mine near Helston to record Christmas carols for a special CD to help raise funds for the Precious Lives Appeal.

Spokesman Andrew Chapple said: "The superb acoustics within the mine give a truly distinctive sound."

The CD will be available from Poldark Mine on December 12 when members of the choir will be singing traditional Christmas carols underground in the Holman's Chamber.

Tours of the mine on that day will be free of charge but donations will be gratefully received for the Precious Lives Appeal.

This is part of a special Christmas Event held at the mine for the family.

There will also be a chance to learn about how the miners of yesteryear celebrated Christmas.

A Christmassy atmosphere will continue above ground with live music and a nativity quiz for children.

Fun activities will be available for a pre-Christmas treat at a small cost.

It is hoped that other attractions will be available including live steam traction engines. The cafe will be open serving traditional Christmas fare. Entry to the site is free and your "presence" is required to help raise money for the Precious Lives Appeal.

“Just to let everyone know we've finished the recording of the CD and we are now well on the way for getting it printed. The CD will include eight Christmas hymns and two traditional Christmas Bible readings.
