When he was 4, the family moved to Trevear and Herbert, along with his brothers and sisters, attended Sennen School and went to Escalls and Sennen Sunday schools.
On leaving school, he went into farming and very much enjoyed showing Guernsey cattle and saddleback pigs.
He joined St Buryan Young Farmers' Club, in which he met Joan Gilbert; romance blossomed, they married in 1949, and there began a lifetime partnership.
Their daughter, Heather, was born in 1956 and they moved to Bosavern Farm, St Just, where Joan worked alongside Herbert on the farm and also took in people for bed and breakfast, from which they made many lifelong friends.
Herbert was a longstanding member of the St Buryan and Marazion Apollo male voice choirs and loved to sing.
He also joined St Just Operatic Society, with which he did 33 shows in 32 years.
Apart from his singing he also enjoyed hunting.
On retirement, they moved into the bungalow at Bosavern and, after going back to Bosfranken Farm just to help out for a short time, continued working for another 12 years.
Eleven years ago, Herbert and Joan moved to Heamoor, where they settled very happily and again made many friends.
Above all, Herbert was a family man. He and Joan celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary four years ago with their family around them, now including grandchildren and great grandchildren, along with many of his brothers and sisters, and their families.
Herbert was well known throughout the area and will be greatly and sadly missed by his family and all who knew him.
