Choose Cornish food awards announces finalists
CORNWALL Food & Drink has announced the finalists of the Choose Cornish Awards, marking the end of the year-long campaign which culminates at next month's Cornwall Food & Drink Festival.
The awards will recognise those businesses that have gone the extra mile to uphold the ethos of the campaign, and the winners will be announced on September 23 after the completion of a rigorous assessment by a panel of esteemed judges, including food writers and business specialists. Initiated by Cornwall Food & Drink and Cornwall Chamber of Commerce, Choose Cornish is all about everyone in Cornwall supporting their local businesses by buying local produce and using local services. The awards are divided into four categories, reflecting areas of our lives where buying local can have a real impact on Cornwall's economy.
THE CHOOSE Cornish Every Day Award, sponsored by Cornwall College, is for a shop or other type of retailer who uses local suppliers extensively and makes it easy for customers to get access to the fine produce that is on their doorstep here in Cornwall. finalists:

THE TRULY Cornish Café Trail Award, sponsored by Cornish Mutual, is for a café that offers exceptional service and uses locally sourced ingredients to create great dishes. Finalists:
Boscastle Farm Shop and Café: surrounded by National Trust Farmland and showcasing quality local produce from the farm and its neighbours.
Picnic Cornwall: an independent coffee shop and deli in Falmouth, passionate about helping people enjoy fine Cornish produce in the local landscape.
Woods Café: a cosy little haven in an old woodman's cottage located at the heart of Cardinham Woods.
THE REAL Cornish Breakfast Award, sponsored by First Great Western, is for a place that serves up just that. This hotly contested and close-scoring category has four finalists:
Jamie Oliver's Fifteen Cornwall: where an après-surf Fifteen fry-up is the order of the day
Rick Stein's Café: where the breakfast menu features many items made by their chefs or sourced locally, served alongside local drinks
Samson Hill Cottage: an eco-guesthouse on the Isles of Scilly offering a 'Full Scillonian'.
Woodlands Country House B&B: which serves their guests a 100 per cent Cornish breakfast which is both traditional and innovative.
THE FOURTH category is for the Best Business Collaboration, sponsored by Cornwall Chamber of Commerce, and recognises the importance of businesses working together. Finalists:
Cornishfoodmarket.co.uk: whose concept depends on partnerships with other local businesses
Jamie Oliver's Fifteen Cornwall: where partnerships and collaborations with other Cornish businesses meet their aims of contributing to the Cornish economy.
Trewithen Dairy: whose collaborations run right through the supply chain, from the 28 Cornish farms who supply their milk to the larger processors who use their dairy products as ingredients.
The winners will be unveiled at a special invitation-only event at Heartlands, where Nathan Outlaw will create a menu of small dishes in the style of his latest venture, Outlaw's Fish Kitchen at Port Isaac, and the Cornish Gin Distillery will reveal their new premium Cornish gin. One will also be crowned the Champion of Choose Cornish Champions, sponsored by the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site.
