Christmas fire safety campaign
FIREFIGHTERS in Newquay have launched a staunch safety campaign to crack down on house fires this Christmas.
Crews at Newquay Community Fire Station are calling on all residents in the area to round up their unwanted and faulty Christmas decorations and drop them into the station, where they will be disposed of safely.
Watch manager Sean Taylor said more fires are caused during the festive period by faulty Christmas light cables and candles than anything else.
He said: "At Christmas we get more incidents started by decorative candles than anything else. We are trying to take Christmas candles out of circulation.

"We're pushing for people, if they want to get rid of their old Christmas lights and decorations, to bring them in as well as decorative candles that people no longer want, decorations and Christmas light cables they do not use or that no longer work.
"We do not want to be a killjoy, we just ask that if people are going to light their candles this Christmas, to keep them away from anything that can catch alight."
Mr Taylor said many unwanted Christmas lights have already been dropped in at the station and will be used for training purposes.
He said that the fire station is open from 7am to 7pm for people to drop off items.
