City inundated by calls about Palace match
TRURO City have been inundated with enquiries about their attractive pre-season friendly against Neil Warnock's Crystal Palace at Treyew Road on Friday night.
City are anticipating a crowd approaching the 1,500 mark and the club are asking supporters to arrive early for the match, which kicks off at 7.30.
Vice chairman Chris Webb told Briton Sport: “The phone has not stopped ringing this week with people asking about the Palace game, so it's clear we are in for a big attendance.
“I would advise people to get here early. The gates open at 6pm and there will be extra parking available in the County Hall car park.
“I have seen the kick-off time advertised as 7.45 in some sections of the media but it is 7.30.
“We have also been informed that Sky Sports News are coming down to do a bit of filming, so it promises to be a great evening.”
City manager Sean McCarthy is interrupting a break in Majorca to be there, before returning to the holiday island on Saturday morning, while club chairman Kevin Heaney will also be back after a holiday.
Admission is £6 for adults and £3 for seniors, with U16s allowed in free as long as they are accompanied by an adult.
Truro are likely to select from a strong first team squad, while Palace, managed by former Plymouth Argyle boss Neil Warnock, bring a 20-man squad to Treyew.
Warnock has returned to his beloved Cornwall after persuading his charismatic chairman Simon Jordan to bring Palace to the West Country for a pre-season tour.
Warnock, who still has a house in South East Cornwall, told Briton Sport: “We were supposed to be going to America for pre-season, but I talked the chairman out of that.
“I told him it would be much better to come down to Cornwall. Fortunately I was able to persuade him.”
Warnock went on: “I don't get down to Cornwall as much as I used to now I'm with Palace, but when you come back it makes you realise how much you miss it.
“Palace is my last job in football and when I finish we will definitely be retiring to Cornwall. We love it here.”
Since leaving Sheffield United following their relegation from the Premier League last year, Warnock has revitalised Palace and dragged them from the brink of relegation in the Championship when he took over in October to a promotion play-off place, where they lost to Bristol City in the semi-finals in May.
Warnock said: “This job has been great for me. It really knocked my confidence when Sheffield United went down, especially with the Tevez situation and West Ham.
“I thought we had a good season in the Premier League and didn't really deserve to go down.
“At Palace I am doing the sort of job I thrive on.
“We haven't got that much money but we are building something and the fans have been fantastic to me.
“There will be plenty of them in Cornwall this week. Lots live down here, but there will also be plenty who travel down to take in the matches.”
Palace's squad arrived in Cornwall on Sunday afternoon. They have spent the week at Trethorne Golf Club in Launceston and trained at Duchy College, Stoke Climsland, near Callington.
Tomorrow night's match is the third and final one of their tour. They beat Tavistock 4-0 at Langsford Park on Monday, and were due to face Bodmin Town at Priory Park last night.
Palace's share of the gate receipts at Treyew tomorrow night will be donated to Ellie's Haven, a Looe-based charity for children with life-threatening illnesses.
Warnock said: “Anybody with kids can empathise, can't they? It makes you realise how lucky you are when your health is ok.”
● Truro City have been drawn away to Tiverton Town in the GX (Southern League) Cup's tie of the first round in the week beginning October 27.
