CLAIRE Powell celebrated the biggest win of her showing career at Praze when her beautifully mannered four-year-old coloured mare Mischief was called forward for the Supreme championship.

This Newquay based rider produced a faultless performance on her striking 16hh skewbald to scoop the top honour under Melroy Francis who returned to his home village for the 200th anniversary celebrations.

“I'm still on cloud nine,” said Claire who works part-time for Kerry and Gillian Lynch of Derowenneck Dressage at Cardinham.

Acquired as a newly broken three-year-old from the Simmonds family of St Columb, Mischief has been carefully brought on by Claire with help from her mother Pam.

Taking the supreme was a fantastic conclusion to an incredible day for this combination who earlier called into Kenwyn Show where they won the best combination and ridden coloured classes.

Following on from their win in the supreme championship at Penzance Show, David Curnow and Pat Opie's five-year-old grey gelding Gew Cederberg added the reserve supreme at Praze to their tally.

Pat who lives at Penstraze, acquired Gew Cederberg from his breeder Brigid Jasper of Truro and this super stamp of a small hunter is by Brigid's Connemara stallion Spinway Kestrel.

Pat's daughter Debbie continued her impressive run with Kelsters Transit of Venus who stood reserve to Gew Cederberg in the part-bred mountain and moorland section before going one better to claim the Arab championship.

Home-bred at Chacewater out of Debbie's mare Lavanda, this 15hh four-year-old is another promising son of Spinway Kestrel.

Holding onto her family's run of success, Debbie's daughter Grace bounced back from a bout of chicken pox and tonsillitis with a winning double. Emma James led Grace and Springbourne Emanuel to the top of the line-ups in the mountain and moorland lead rein and ridden small breeds.

Mrs Lowth made a worthwhile trip from the New Forest to cast her eye over the mountain and moorland entry and she was clearly impressed with the size and quality of the classes which saw eight of the nine native breeds forward.

Leah Smith from Wendron lifted the ridden championship on her seven-year-old Connemara mare Fia's Pride who then went onto take the mountain and moorland working hunter championship. The in-hand equivalent saw Jonathan Payne and Jenna Braddon of the Trekerwys Stud, St Day, emerge victorious with their four-year-old Exmoor stallion Dunkery Tawny Owl.

Well known show jumper, Lynsey Heywood who lives a short distance from the venue, made a winning debut in the show ring when she lifted the Durnie Richards Memorial novice hunter award on Tidmarsh Ted.

Rebecca Williams from Helston continued her successful run on Dalcotes Manton with the ridden championship, while Rebecca Keast took the overall combination honour on Shulas Troy.

Brian Facey found the right form on his up and coming chestnut gelding Java Raindance, to record a convincing win in the three-round Praze Bicentenary open show jumping championship.

“Luckily we were blessed with good weather,” said horse section secretary, Frank Webb. “On behalf of the committee I would like to thank everyone who helped make our Bicentary Show such a success.”
