AN ARMY of white clay 'warriors' is amassing in mid-Cornwall, thanks to an invitation from Wheal Martyn Museum and Country Park to participate in creative workshops throughout August.

Local author Emma Mansfield is collating a collection of china clay figures as part of an upcoming exhibition at the museum, inspired by the famous Terracotta Army of Xian in China.

She said: "I wanted to do something that encourages people to go to the museum.

"The great thing about clay is that it's really accessible; anyone can do it."

The clay warriors will feature in The Little Book Of The Clay Country, which collates anecdotes, facts and images of the area and will be available in December this year. Miss Mansfield said: "100 per cent of the proceeds are going to the local community."

The project offers visitors the opportunity to contribute to the rich history of china clay mining in Cornwall.

The Clay Play Days workshops will run from 2pm until 5pm every Sunday in August. For more information call Wheal Martyn Country Park on 01726 850362.

Wheal Martyn is the only china clay museum in the UK, with its exhibits including Cornwall's largest functioning water wheel and spectacular panoramas of a modern working clay pit.
