TWO prominent parish councillors from within the St Austell and Newquay constituency have joined the Mebyon Kernow (MK) party.

Former Liberal Democrat councillor Brian Higman represented Roche on Cornwall Council between 1999 and 2009. He also served on Restormel Borough Council prior to 2003 and was Mayor of the Borough in 1994-95.

Mr Higman, who left the Lib Dems in 2010, said he is disillusioned with the party and

"fed up with 'national' politics."

He continues to serve on Roche Parish Council and is involved with many local organisations, including the Roche Victory Hall.

Mr Higman said: "Now is the time to ensure that politics in Cornwall is actually for the good of Cornwall. That is why I am pleased to be joining Mebyon Kernow."

Also joining MK is Mevagissey businessman and vice-chairman of the fishing port's parish council Matt Facey.

Mr Facey also plays a very active role in the community.

He said: "It is time to bring politics back to our villages and towns."

“Brian Higman is a passionate Cornishman and has made an hounourable decision to join MK. I think for 30 or 40 years the Liberals have been moving toward Government, but no one ever thought they would be supporting the most vicious right wing bunch of Tories that have ever been in power.”

“Not surprised Mr Higman has left the LibDems. People joined the LibDems because they thought they would never be called upon to make difficult decisions facing the nation. Sitting on the fence is much easier.”
