A SCHOOLBOY and his mother were in "floods of tears" when told neighbours as young as 4 had secretly raised money to replace his stolen Christmas presents.

Last week the West Briton revealed how burglars stole Pool Academy pupil Joe Spencer's precious Xbox games console, games and Kinect sensors from his home at Camborne.

The 12-year-old and his mother Alex, 38, were asleep when intruders ransacked his 'boy cave' and took the gifts he had dreamed of for more than two years.

Now their neighbours at Treloweth Way have held a sponsored car wash, sponsored dance, online auction, tombola, lucky dip, face-painting and jumble sale, raising more than £500 to replace the items.

One of the organisers, Lisa Arthur, 34, said children as young as 4 donated their pocket money.

The mother of four said: "When I heard what had happened I went to my neighbour's home and we discussed it and decided we needed to do something about it.

"Alex is the kind of person who'd do anything for anyone; if you needed the money she'd take the last penny from her pocket.

"Joe's a fantastic boy; he's not a spoilt child and he has to work hard to get a toy, so we were devastated to hear about what happened. My heart was breaking. It should have never happened to anyone, let alone them."

Ms Spencer said: "We thought they were raising for Comic Relief and then they all came around the corner and as soon as I saw the Xbox, games and the bike – well, we just couldn't believe our eyes.

"Joe was over the moon. We were just in a flood of tears and so moved. Their generosity and goodwill is just amazing and 'Thank you' is not enough."

Ms Spencer used the extra money to buy her son games and a new controller, and invested some in added security for their home.
