Tory-Lib Dem electoral pact? Not a bit of it. Some have suggested that the coalition parties stand aside for each other in seats where Labour is the major threat, giving both a strategic advantage. MPs in Devon and Cornwall, where the two parties are arch- enemies, have scoffed at the idea. David Cameron certainly is not giving the notion much credence, as he explained to regional journalists: "When the election comes we will be fighting for every vote and every seat. We're two separate parties and just as we compete in local government elections, when it comes to the general election we will be competing very hard."
Football news. Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt was running the line during the annual party conference football match between Tory MPs and political journalists. While the minister avoided any controversy during the 90 minutes, the game ended with his fellow MPs winning 4-2. As Culture Secretary, he decided on New Year's Eve 2010 to train as a referee. Working with the Football Association he completed hours of training, matches and tests before becoming a fully qualified referee and linesman.
Truro and Falmouth MP Sarah Newton was recently appointed deputy chairman of the Conservative Party, and her job will involve candidate selection for the next general election, she explained to the Western Morning News at conference. Aspiring Tory MPs now know who to butter up.
