Contrasting fortunes for Newquay & Par athletes
NEWQUAY & Par athletes had a mixed weekend in their league commitments, finishing second in the Southern Men's League at Newbury on Saturday.
This keeps them in the top half of the division one table but slumped to one of their worst defeats at Exeter in the South West league on Sunday to set them firmly in the relegation zone, having just been promoted from division two.
The Men's team has seen a resurgence this year with an increase in new young talent alongside the established Seniors who have kept the team alive over the last few years.
A windy but sunny track brought some top performances with the main opposition coming from the host club, Newbury AC, who only stepped in at the last moment to offer their help in making sure the match went ahead.

Dan Pearce was a double winner on the day, firstly in the 400m Hurdles in 58.7s and later in the Javelin, throwing five metres further than anyone else at 43.89m, Harry Woodward adding the 'B' win for maximum points with a throw of 38.70m.
Another successful pairing which brought maximum points came in the Pole Vault. Isaac Clayton cleared 3.60m for the overall win and Rueben Cohen 3.30m for second and the 'B' win.
With a rampant Newbury, wins were hard to come by and even the usual throws pairing of Brett Marsh and Mike Madden were thwarted but still only dropping a single point in the Hammer.
The young athletes produced some p/b's against the quality opposition. Under 17 Jack Wightman achieved English Schools qualifying times for both 100m and 400m at 11.2s and 50.9s, events where Under 20, James Clayton also lowered his times to 11.4s and 52.1s in the 'B' races.
Another Under 20, Kyle Chapman, reduced his 800m best to 2m:06.1s and the 1,500m time to 4m:34.1s, with Nick Owens making his debut in the league in the 1500m.
Match scores: 1 Newbury 124.5; 2 N&P 95; 3 Thurrock 72.5; 4 S. London Harriers 62.
After an opening match in Division 1 of the South West League just two weeks ago, things were looking hopeful with a fourth place.
However, this seems to have come unstuck as the Newquay and Par teams across the age groups suffered from a poor turn out and a bottom placing against the six other teams which moved them down to sixth overall and a relegation battle with three other clubs at the last two fixtures in July and September.
The athletes that did support the club produced some excellent results but could never fill the gaps in events which has cost the club dearly.
Six of the younger members of the Southern Men's team turned out again despite the late return, this time, competing against athletes of their own age.
In the Under 17 events, Jack Wightman put his all into the 100m and 200m to win both in 11.85s and 23.16s and kieran Rowe showed his versatility for second in the 3,000m at 10m:10.65s.
Maria Brett was just short of her County Record in the Under 17 Women's Hammer but still broke the division one league record with a winning throw of 35.92m, while in this age group Katie Yeomans leapt to 4.72m to win the Long Jump.
There were two other wins, both in the High Jump, Dexter Cater cleared 1.80m in the Senior event and Under 15 Sam Robins emphasised his County top billing with a new best height of 1.75m.
There were several in the top three:
Under 13 Girls - 200m Rachel-Clare Howe 3rd (30.68s).
Under 13 Boys - 800m Finn Birnie 2nd (2m:32.2s).
Under 15 Girls - Discus Natalie Brown 2nd (21.03m); Pole Vault Claudia Carlyon 2nd (2.05m); 3000m Lily England 3rd (11m:28.14s).
Under 17 Men - 400m Hurdles Corey Cross 2nd (65.60s).
Senior Women - Hammer Jacky Brett 2nd (18.54m).
Teams: Yeovil 1145; Cornwall AC 1138; Taunton 1055; Exeter 921; Poole AC 871; Newton Abbot 747; N&P 644.
