A small affordable housing scheme which caused a big stir in a Westcountry fishing village will provide homes for "the younger generation" to come, developers have said.

Cornwall Council approved plans by developers Westcountry Land to build 31 homes in a coastal Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) at Mevagissey, on the south Cornwall coast, despite significant local opposition.

Ten of the houses on the three-acre site will be for open market sale, while 21 will be "affordable" – priced between £71,250 to £106,000 with some boasting uninterrupted sea views.

John Schuttkacker, director of Westcountry Land, said he believed the council decision, which weighed the impact of the landscape against the need for affordable housing, was the right result for the fishing village. Mevagissey has become a magnet for tourism and for second home owners, resulting in people who live and work there struggling to find themselves a home, he said. "Yes, it's been an emotional issue of developing the land, but in this case there is a dire need."
