Cornish Olympians to grace Sports Awards
CORNISH Olympians and Paralympians will be coming together tonight, for one of the first times since the London Games, to celebrate the county's sports volunteers at the 2012 Cornwall Sports Awards.
The prestigious Awards will be staged at the Headland Hotel in Newquay to recognise and reward the contributions made by dedicated volunteer sports coaches, officials, clubs, organisations and young leaders from across the county.
In the year of our home Olympics, there has never been a better time for the county's elite sports personalities to attend the event and formally pay tribute to the grassroots volunteers who have played a considerable part in their sporting journey.
Athletes attending the event include Olympic rower Annie Vernon from Wadebridge, Paralympic table tennis player David Wetherill from Torpoint, and Olympic fencers James Honeybone and Sophie Williams from Truro.

Also, Tim Bunting, general manager of Shelterbox UK & Ireland, will be accompanying Vernon in delivering inspirational speeches for the 200 strong members of the audience.
Vernon said: "I'm really excited about the Cornwall Sports Awards, being a very proud Cornish woman, and this will be a great opportunity to bring together and celebrate all the athletes, coaches and volunteers that contribute to the sporting life in this county.
"I've now retired from international rowing after eight years at the coal face, and I'm delighted to have the opportunity to give something back to all those in the county who have supported me over the years."
The event has grown every year since it started in 2006 and is now a key date in the Cornish sports calendar.
This year's ceremony has been designed to build on the success of last year's event and the Sports Partnership is delighted to have the opportunity to bring together our Olympians and Paralympians.
Mike Thomas, Cornwall Sports Partnership director, said: "Volunteers are the backbone of sport and the stars of the Sports Awards.
