COACHING EDUCATION - MATCH DAY ANALYSIS:
The Cornish Pirates 'Coach Education Programme' of events have proved very beneficial, and the next session, focusing on 'Match Day Analysis', will take place this weekend.
The Pirates play Ayr in the British & Irish Cup on Sunday (ko 3pm) and the session will last from 1pm – 5.30pm.
Ever wondered what a professional team does in the build up to a match? Ever wondered if there is a plan amongst the chaos of a game, and have you ever wondered what goes on away from the post match interviews you hear in the press? This match day analysis will provide a fascinating insight into what goes on in the build up to a game including aims/objectives for the match as well as what threats the opposition holds. Alongside this, coaches will also see what analysis takes place as well as be given ideas of how they can bring differing levels into match analysis. The Coach Education session both pre and post match is completely free, however those wishing to attend will still need to purchase a match day ticket, either on the gate (£15) or in advance (£13).
For more information or to register your interest for this particular session, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org
PARTNER CLUBS TICKET OFFER - 20 TICKETS FOR £150:
Looking ahead to the beginning of the New Year the Cornish Pirates are aiming to increase the Club Partnership Programme offering to another level.
Participating clubs are linked to a particular Pirates player who will visit them four times through the season, and a special ticket offer now available to Partner Clubs will enable them to purchase 20 tickets for this Sunday's Cornish Pirates versus Ayr match for just £150, which breaks down to a reasonable £7.50 per ticket (the usual cost would be £15). This match is an important British & Irish Cup encounter in a competition that the Pirates take very seriously. Indeed, they are presently top of their pool having impressively recorded four bonus point wins, with their focus now on securing home advantage in the quarter-finals.

THANKS FROM FRANK AND NANCY:
As we settle into the New Year, and now that they have returned home to Kansas, distant supporters Frank and Nancy Mirikitani have contacted the Pirates to once again thank everyone who made them feel so welcome during their recent Christmas stay.
Frank and Nancy have made a number of visits to Cornwall over the years, following Frank having toured here in 1977 with Kansas Jayhawks. Indeed, the keen traveller, who has been on many tours about the world, always recalls his greatest rugby memory was playing against the Pirates and propping against former England international and British Lion 'Stack' Stevens.
Good friends made over the years include Ann Tucker, Graham 'Granite' Waters, Phil and Sally Westren, plus Billy Hunter from Truro. A former President of the Pirates, George 'Bosun' James, who sadly passed away last year, was another fond associate.
At the Cornish Pirates home match versus Plymouth Albion on Boxing Day Frank and Nancy were invited to make both the 50/50 draw and the draw organised by the Cornish Pirates Supporters Club for a unique rugby shirt, which had been autographed by recent Pirates who are now playing at Premiership level.
Also accompanying Frank and Nancy on their recent visit were two American friends who were impressed with both the rugby and the Pirates 'Westholme' clubhouse. Frank commented:
“We don't have proper rugby clubs in America and they were particularly taken with the camaraderie and friendliness shown by Cornish rugby supporters.”
Frank added: “They also now know why Nancy and I keep coming back!”
SIGNED SHIRT RAFFLE WINNER ANNOUNCED:
The raffle draw for the unique and framed Cornish Pirates rugby shirt signed by former and now high performing players such as Joe Bearman, Rob Cook, Blair Cowan, Darren Dawidiuk, Matt Hopper, Will James, Matt Jess, Jack Nowell, Carl Rimmer, Gareth Steenson and Dave Ward, was made during the half-time period of the Pirates versus Plymouth Albion match played on Boxing Day.
The Cornish Pirates Supporters Club had admirably organised the raffle, but who was the lucky winner? Well, the ticket drawn by Nancy Mirikitani, visiting from America, along with her husband Frank who had played for Kansas Jayhawks against the Pirates in 1977, was one purchased by Elizabeth Nicholas, wife of former player Graham.
Elizabeth was taken aback but equally delighted to win the prize, which will be passed on to one of her sons, Treive Nicholas, who is also a keen supporter. Treive commented:
“The shirt is a present money can't buy. I bid for one from the British & Irish Cup final, but was out of luck on that occasion, so this shirt is a very pleasant surprise!
“It is going to a good home and will be given pride of place on a wall. I never tire of reminding my friends that though they support the fashionable Premiership clubs, the success they're enjoying is frequently underpinned by former Pirates players that we helped develop, and there no better examples than Mr. D. Ward and Cookie!”
PIRATES 'SHOE' SUPPORT FOR WESSEX GUNNERS:
Besides being a Director with the Cornish Pirates, Anita George is also 'mine host' at the Logan Rock Inn, and ahead of Christmas a call was made for the people of Penwith and for supporters of the Pirates to provide shoe boxes that could be filled with welcome goodies for the Wessex Gunners based at Camp Bastion in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.
In total 76 shoe boxes were filled and delivered to bring deserved seasonal cheer to our troops, one of whom is Major Richard Harmer, who comes from Penwith and was over the moon with the response shown by so many people, including pupils of St. Buryan Academy Primary School who were also keen to send Christmas cards.
Besides helping with the call for shoe boxes, the Cornish Pirates also sent a shirt for display (and wearing!) and a 'Pirates! Pirates!' book for reading, which were both greatly appreciated.
Richard commented: “The Cornish Pirates shirts are proudly worn and the book signed by skipper Gavin is awesome too. There are now lots more followers of the Pirates in Afghanistan!”
