Cornish Pirates boost squad with new wing signing
The Cornish Pirates have strengthened their squad in the lead up to the RFU Championship play-offs with the signing of wing Ashley Smith from Premiership side London Welsh, writes Dick Straughan.
The 21-year-old joined the Exiles from London Wasps in June 2011 after spells at Stourbridge, Tynedale and Loughborough Students and featured in the squad which faced the Pirates in a 17-all draw at Old Deer Park last season.

He made a total of 17 appearances for London Welsh scoring three tries but struggled to secure a regular first team slot with fierce competition from Joe Ajuwa and Nick Scott.
Smith captained London Welsh at the Premiership Rugby 7s Series Finals last summer and can also cover at full-back and centre.

Pirates head coach Ian Davies said that he was pleased to be able to sign Smith but does not expect him to feature in Sunday's squad to face Doncaster Knights at the Mennaye Field (2.30pm).
"He's quick and he has played for Wasps in the A League but he has not played much this season," he said.
"We will give him the opportunity to play and prove his worth either to us or maybe somebody else but we may look to sending him out on loan at Redruth in the short term."
Davies added: "The Mennaye doesn't really suit fast players at the moment but he could be a really useful weapon for us later on in the season."
