Cornish Pirates coach Davies looking forward to Worthing return
THE Cornish Pirates head to Sussex on Saturday as they continue their programme of pre-season warm-up fixtures against National One newcomers Worthing Raiders at Roundstone Lane (3pm).
The Pirates camp left Polson Bridge in good heart last weekend after beating the Cornish All Blacks and St Austell in a triangular tournament, and will now look to step up their performance before heading to London and a date with Saracens next week.
Head coach Ian Davies, who joined the Pirates from Worthing four years ago, is looking forward to Saturday's game and believes that it will be another good test for his young squad.
"There are a few boys at the club I still remember but they have had quite a turnover of players and current coach Kieran Dawson has them playing a different way," he said.
"But they have an aggressive defence and counter-attack well which will test our defence but I thought we went well when Launceston had the ball, and scored two tries when our defence turned over their ball."
The Pirates welcomed popular flanker Chris Morgan back to action at Polson Bridge after nearly a year on the sidelines with an arm injury. Ian Davies commented: "It was fantastic to see him back out there. He was quite apprehensive beforehand but he just brings incredible maturity to our team."
Returning to the team this weekend should be Alan Paver, Jack Andrew, Mike Pope and James Sandford, while Laurie McGlone should be fit by the end of the month.
Shane Cahill (calf) however is definitely out of the Worthing game and Canadian duo Matt Evans and Aaron Carpenter are now away on international duty. Centres Alex Dancer and Junior Fatialofa are doubts having both picked up knocks on Saturday.
Worthing secured a place in National One narrowly beating Stourbridge in an end of season promotion play-off. Saturday's game is their first formal pre-season fixture before beginning their league campaign away to Wharfedale on September 7.
