Cornish apprenticeship campaign gathers pace
A campaign which aims to find 300 Cornish apprenticeship places in the first 100 days of 2014 is gathering pace.
Following the campaign’s launch last week in Penzance, three more launch events have taken place.
The campaign aims to generate interest among employers across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly in getting young people into work with an Apprenticeship and has the support of all six MPs in the county.
Yesterday, Sarah Newton, MP for Truro and Falmouth, hosted a breakfast launch event at Knowledge Spa in Truro with apprenticeship ambassadors Helen Lynch from RCHT and Benjamin Milby from Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant.

She said: ‘‘We already have some excellent examples of Apprenticeships in Truro & Falmouth, with businesses working with our local colleges, such as the award winning Apprenticeship scheme operated by Pendennis Worldclass Superyachts in Falmouth.
“However there is definitely scope for new apprenticeships to be created in businesses across my constituency.”
At St Austell, local MP Stephen Gilbert, who hosted a lunchtime event at the St Austell Printing Company with apprenticeship ambassador Kylie Wickett from Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Since 2010, we have doubled the number of apprenticeship starts in Cornwall and the Cornwall Apprenticeships campaign is now working across the county to boost that further and create 300 new places in 100 days.”
The day ended in Southeast Cornwall where South East Cornwall MP Sheryll hosted an afternoon tea event at the Cornwall School of Tourism and Hospitality in St Mellion with Jill Carr of Pendennis Shipyard Limited and Andy Hardy of Premier Carpets.
