Cornish 'breakaway' Bill for Parliament
PLANS for Cornwall to follow Wales and Scotland in breaking away from the rest of the country will be presented to Parliament this week.
North Cornwall MP Dan Rogerson will unveil a Bill which would give the county control over its own affairs, wrestling power away from Whitehall and "unelected regional quangos".

The move comes less than four months after the launch of Cornwall's new unitary council, which many hoped would act as the catalyst for greater devolution of power to the area.
Mr Rogerson's planned legislation would give Cornwall greater responsibility in areas such as agriculture, heritage, education, housing and economic sustainability.

"I believe strongly that Cornwall should re-assert its rightful place within the United Kingdom," he said.
"Cornwall is a unique part of the country, and this should be reflected in the way that it is governed.
"We should have the right to determine areas of policy that affect the people of Cornwall the hardest, such as rules on housing."
MPs in Cornwall have mounted a long-running campaign against the housing targets imposed in the Regional Spatial Strategy plan which proposes 68,500 homes for the county.
The Liberal Democrats argue that local people are better-placed to decide where homes should go.
St Ives MP Andrew George claimed the county had become a "developers' paradise" without building enough affordable homes.
In the Government of Cornwall Bill, to be presented to Parliament tomorrow, Mr Rogerson hopes to "demonstrate to the House of Commons that there is a political and social will for Cornwall to be recognised as its own nation".
He added: "Constitutionally, Cornwall has the right to a level of self-government. If the Government is going to recognise the right of Scotland and Wales to greater self-determination because of their unique cultural and political positions, then they should recognise ours."

“Look if you look into History, the vast majority of Cornwall has "FRENCH" history and is not really Celtic at all.
Just take a moment to look into the history check out the names almost all are descended from France.
Maybe Dan Rogerson should leave the Liberal Party and join Mebyon Kernow”

Invariably it always (for some reason) gets under the skin of English people and elicits various comments, most of which are derogatory. Yet as a Celtic people, that¿s exactly what we did - and long before the name Angleland came into existence.
Yet, even though Athelstan marked our border, the Tamar, as the dividing line between England and Cornwall, the river was not wide enough to contain the burgeoning English influence that continues to this day.
Our ¿Duchy of Cornwall¿ that has the constitutional position as that of being ¿extra-territorial¿ to England, has been conveniently dropped and superseded by the term ¿council¿ - thereby ignoring the 1969-71 report into the British constitution that states official sources should cite the Duchy and NOT County in recognition of our position in relation to that of England. And so it goes on with the imposition of an Anglo-centric school curriculum designed to teach Cornish children that they are English by excluding their own Cornish history. No mention of the land of Dumnonia, Cornish Celts or of the English imposing their English Prayer book onto a Cornish speaking nation - and the resulting aftermath. How true the African saying that ¿Until the lion can write its history, it will always be written by the hunter¿.
So good luck to Dan Rogerson and you¿ll need it boy. Our Cornish land is gripped within a tight fist clinging on to the dying embers of English colonialism. A colonialism that has done so much to erode our Cornish identity to the extent that even some Cornish don¿t realise it!

Cornwall cannot support itself, halfd the people who live here are not Cornish, and this idiot wants us to go "independant"?
Whose money are we going to use? Who is going to pay fo us to survive?
We are the poorest county in the UK, and it's idiots like this man who have done nothing to address this fundamentals, which has got us this way.
Get Cornwall to a point where we are self finacing THEN lets think about some form of local control. (And within six months we'll be begging to be part of England again!!!)”
