Call for Cornish national park

Vast swathes of the Cornish landscape should be designated as a national park to safeguard the county's "most prized asset", campaigners have said.

The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) in Cornwall is researching a bid for prestigious park status which currently applies to only 15 areas in the UK, including Dartmoor and Exmoor.
It wants to upgrade the protection currently afforded to the county's 12 areas of outstanding natural beauty, which include ten stretches of Cornish coastline, the Camel Estuary and Bodmin Moor.

Tony Hilton, acting chairman of CPRE Cornwall, said national park status would not only protect the countryside but deliver economic benefits through tourism.
"People come to Cornwall for the peace and quiet and its beauty," Mr Hilton said. "I think we should be protecting that from hell-for-leather and haphazard growth.
"We are not a group of fuddy-duddies who don't want to see any development at all, but we do want to see it done properly.
"It should also bring some economic benefits for the area. Gateway towns in other parks' areas do extremely well because of their national park status."
Mr Hilton said launching a formal bid "would take time" but was being worked on.
Dartmoor was among the first four national parks to be designated in 1951. The Government would need to approve any bid from Cornwall, which would also need widespread support.
The last area to be awarded national park status was the South Downs in 2010, after a concerted campaign lasting more than a decade.

“I personally would love to see Bodmin Moor and other areas designated National Park. However what is a National Park? More importantly what should a National Park be? I for one think that National Parks should be areas where the natural eco-system is allowed to flourish. These areas no longer exist in Britain, and yet our very existance as a Species depends upon the eco-system we are/have destroyed. Under European Directives, Member States are meant to encourage 'Rewilding', Britain to date has done nothing. Such areas with Native Species of Tree, Plant and Animal Species would help to stabalise our eco-system and at the same time be a focus for the Public to see what Britain used to be like. If Humans are going to survive into the distant future, we need a new approach and I see 'National Parks' as one step in the right direction.”

“Big_Ger... I am well aware of what National Parks are unlike Truro_England. (see first comment).
I totally agree that we need to look after our countryside and to protect it from being spoiled.
We also need to look after our Celtic Heritage. That, to me, is equally as important if not more so.
I'm no book learned scholar. I prefer to follow my heart and my heart is in Cornwall the COUNTRY that I love.
I was fortunate enough to have had Local History and Geography taught at school and was made well aware of my identity. That, of course, was before a National Curriculum was brought in!”

“Today I'm in full agreement with Big_Ger. I am supportive of any initiative that will prevent further greed driven 'Disneyesque' treatment of our county and sensitively handle development and protection of what he quite rightly describes as 'our greatest resource.'
But as the article mentions, these are the first tentative steps on what will surely be a very long walk indeed.”

“Cornwall is only classed as a County for administration purposes. The eldest son of the reigning monarch, from the moment of his birth, becomes the Duke of Cornwall. Hence... Cornwall is a Duchy!!! Claims for Nationality follows the Celtic Heritage and can be shown from the Pan Celtic flag showing the National flags of the Celtic Countries. Baner Piran is there! Cornwall is recognised by Ireland, Scotland,Wales,Etc. So what's the problem with Recognition by the English. Unfortunately Cornwalls History has long been taught in schools from an English point of view and more recent Generations do not Know Cornwalls real History.
Cornwall not big enough to cope on it's own? Take the Isle of Man as an example.... They have their own Parliament and don' seem to do too bad.”

“I think they are indicating a national park in the same way Dartmoor and Exmoor are national parks, a park for the whole nation of Britain.
I think it's a damn good idea. Protect some of the most beautiful parts of the county as they are now our greatest resource.”
