Cornish think-tank Open Briefing goes global on military intelligence
FAR from the beaches and tourists outside its door, a Cornwall-based consultancy and think-tank called Open Briefing is quietly making its presence felt around the world.
The organisation has published Remote Control War, a major new study into armed drones in China, India, Iran, Israel, Russia and Turkey.
The authors, Rob O’Gorman and Chris Abbott, identified more than 200 different unmanned aerial vehicles in use or in development by the countries in question, with 29 of these being armed drones.
The report quickly went viral on social networks such as Twitter and received media coverage in Canada, Switzerland and the United States.

Open Briefing is the world’s first intelligence agency for civil society. A not-for-profit social enterprise, the agency is staffed by an international team of intelligence, military, law enforcement, government and media professionals, providing a range of intelligence and research services to concerned citizens and non-governmental organisations.
Mr Abbott, founder and executive director of Open Briefing, said: “We produce actionable and predictive intelligence. We tell you what has happened and what is likely to happen next. Most importantly, we tell you why.
“We do this so that better informed citizens can more effectively engage in peace and security debates and civil society organisations can make the right advocacy choices. Together, we can then influence positive defence, security and foreign policy decisions by our governments.”
Abbott, who lives in Marazion, added: “When I started Open Briefing two years ago I had no idea it would be such a success. We now have a team of analysts around the world and are making a real impact on defence policy discussions. People seem to really like what we are trying to do - and to think this is all being done from West Cornwall.”
