Cornwall College boat building project helps unemployed gain skills
AN UNUSUAL project is helping a group of unemployed people gain confidence to enter the world of work.
They spent five days together building a boat which they launched at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall.
Run by Cornwall College's work and skills training academy, Jobcentre Plus and training adviser Prospects, the project took on people in need of gaining general social and employability skills. They worked together to build coracles, one of the first types of boat ever made.
Morwenna Collins, a mum of two from Falmouth, said: "At first I was very nervous as I suffer with confidence issues, but the tutors made me feel so welcome.

"I didn't think I could do it, especially when asked to build a boat but I really surprised myself and got involved."
Miswan Sirat, 55, from Falmouth, said: "I now feel ready to do other courses to build my skills to lead into employment."
The course addressed teamwork, sharing ideas, confidence building and raising awareness of the opportunities available to build skills in the community.
Jo Dodd, works skills training academy manager, said: "This course is a step towards employability as some of the learners need to build their social skills and learn to work as part of a team.
"Not everybody is employable straight away. We are furnishing them with the confidence to be able to take the next step on their journey to employment."
