Cornwall Council launch healthy eating book
Cornwall Council has launched a booklet of recipe ideas to help people make their food go further.
The free guide, Eat Well Spend Less, provides tips on how to eat healthily on a budget and is part of the council’s ‘Winter Wellbeing’ campaign.
Every day in England, five million potatoes, seven million slices of bread and 1.3 million yoghurts and yoghurt drinks are thrown away.
Most of the food that is wasted could have been eaten.
The Eat Well Spend Less booklet gives recipes detailing how leftover food can be made in to tasty meals, reducing the amount of produce thrown away.
It also details how to shop smartly and contains a glossary of cooking terms.
Oliver Baines, chief executive of the Cornwall Community Foundation said: "The great message from this book is that we can eat better, stay healthy, and spend less, all at the same time. Many may think that good food costs more - this book proves the opposite."
The guide, which was created in partnership with Inclusion Cornwall and Truro, Redruth, Camborne and Pool food banks, will be available at food banks, Council one stop shops, libraries and to download from the Council website.
Judith Haycock, Cornwall Council cabinet member for health and adult care, said: "These are great ideas anyone can use to plan ahead, eat healthily and save money. I hope that they will get people really thinking about their food, and how much we don’t really need and waste unnecessarily."
