A Cornwall Councillor has resigned from the Liberal Democrats in protest against the actions of the national party and the introduction of the "pasty tax".

Chris Pascoe announced his resignation yesterday and said that other members of the party could also swap sides in the next few days.

Mr Pascoe said that the recent local election results in other parts of the country meant that within the party "everyone is scared about their position".

He said: "I think Nick Clegg has become the lap dog of the Conservatives and is taking all the flak. I think the pasty tax is an insult to the Cornish."

Mr Pascoe was also at the centre of a huge planning row last week over the approval of a 1,500 home development near to land he owns.

But he said this was not the reason for leaving the Lib Dems and that he had been considering the move for some time.

Mr Pascoe is now in talks with the Independent group at Cornwall Council.

“While the pasty tax is but one blow for business and the buying public, surely the Liberal Democrat betrayal at hoodwinking the electorate that they are a left of centre party should have meant that Mr Pascoe and anyone else in that oufit with a conscience should have packed it in two years ago.”

“Quitting over a relatively minor issue compared to all the other parts of their manifesto the Lib Dems turned their backs on is too little too late. Vox_populi this is like the politicians at Westminster quite happy to jump ship but not very willing to put themselves up for a re-election in their new colours in case they lose their go at the trough.”

“The so-called pasty tax is, in my view, a complete affront. I view it as a tax on food. Unlike VAT on food served in restaurants, et c., which is a value added tax for eating the food indoors under shelter with a knife and fork, and so on, the pasty tax is an actual tax on the food itself.

Good on Chris Pascoe for a stand on a truly important issue. I personally will not tolerate a tax on my food even though I eat pasties only as a treat a few times a year.

A tax on food to bail out the bankers. Are we mad? A tax on food to keep a completely corrupt financial system on the rails for a few more moments? Completely unacceptable.”

“What a meaningless principle to quit a party over.
Even worse was that this small matter was about making things equalised.”

“THE BIG ISSUE OF THE DAY for a LIB DEM

    The Pasty Tax.

We have children murdering their grandparents, fathers butchering their families, the death of democracy via the EU, Drugs, Sexual Diseases, and ferile youth and he finds 50p on a pasty the tipping point.

Save us from self serving Lib Dems.”

    A Lib Dem 'with principles'.

So principled that he is set to join the 'Independents' whose support keeps Fat Alec and his cronies in power.”

“Pasty tax, which is infact not called a pasty tax it's a tax on hot food, is there to stop tax avoidance through a VAT loophole. It's not offensive to the Cornish, I am Cornish. Seems a lot of people are supporting this tax avoidance. Businesses don't actually lose out because they pass the cost onto consumers. I don't know any people who think an extra 50p will stop them buying one and those that do are just that little bit sad. Also I would much rather spend an extra 50p tax through choice on a pasty then having an extra mandatory tax on my earnings. It's here to stay, get over it.”
