Cornwall MP Stephen Gilbert seeks flood guarantees for at-risk homes
A Cornish MP has called on the Government to guarantee all business and home owners can access decent flood insurance in the wake of this weekend's deluge.
Stephen Gilbert, the Liberal Democrat MP for St Austell and Newquay, said recent events should act as a wake-up call on the issue.
He said Westminster must act to renew or replace the so-called Statement of Principles, essentially a deal between the insurers and the Government that keeps flood insurance available and affordable.
"For the second time in just two years, communities across the heart of Cornwall have been hit by destructive flooding, causing damage to homes and businesses and bringing misery to many," said Mr Gilbert.

"Thankfully no lives have been lost and the response of our emergency services has been exemplary.
"The Government must now respond too, and ensure that businesses and home owners are able to access flood insurance at a reasonable cost."
Mr Gilbert added: "The last two days should be a wake-up call for a Government that needs to grip this issue and do so quickly."
