Cornwall community stars recognised with British Empire Medal

Seven women from Cornwall have been recognised for their services to community, culture and safety at sea in the New Year Honours list. Each will receive the British Empire Medal (BEM).

The women awarded the BEM are:

Mrs Lynn Bartlett - For services to the community in Polruan.

Mrs Alison Bevan - For services to Cultural Heritage in Cornwall. Alison runs the Penlee House Gallery and Museum in Penzance, where she has worked since 1999.

Mrs Dorothy Fisher - For services to Animal Welfare and the community in Cornwall. Dorothy Fisher is a fundraiser for the RSPCA in Camborne.

Mrs Amanda Kimmins - For services to the community of St. Agnes, Cornwall. She set up the local football club and sports club, a local free newspaper called the Bolster, is a member of the Chamber of Commerce and of St Agnes Museum.

She told ThisIsCornwall this morning that she was a "reluctant recipient" and remarked modestly that "I'm just part of a big community that works hard in lots of different ways".

Mrs Pamela Richards - For services to the community in Foxhole, Cornwall.

Mrs Barbara Snowling - For services to the community in Crafthole, Cornwall.

The British Empire Medal (BEM) was established in 1922 and is awarded to individuals for meritorious civil service. Recipients are affiliated with the Order of the British Empire.
