VIDEO and PICTURES: Cornwall counts the cost of floods but remains on weather warning

Cornwall is waking up to count the cost of flooding which has affected many towns and villages in the Duchy following strong winds, torrential rain and a high tide which took place in the early hours of this morning.

A severe flood warning remains in place for the River Cober in Helston. There is major concern at Loe Pool where water levels are continuing to rise this morning.

Flood warnings remain on the River Par, Lower and Middle and Upper Tamar, the River Hayle.

The Duchy remains on a yellow weather warning for Sunday, with bands of heavy rain and gale force winds, rising back up to an amber weather warning for Christmas Eve on Monday.

RNLI’s Flood Rescue Team rescued 12 people, 2 dogs, 6 cats in Lostwithiel overnight, where yesterday evening 195 resident were encouraged by police to evacuate to rest centres. The centres were closed at 1pm as residents no longer needed shelter.

Advice for properties affected by flooding is:

- Turn off the electricity supply at the mains, if you can do so safely.

- Get out of the water - move family and pets upstairs or to higher ground.

- Make sure all electrical circuits are fully dried out and checked by an electrical engineer after the flood, before switching back on.

- Do not attempt to turn off the electricity supply while standing in water.

Devon and Cornwall Police said: "This has again been a significant and challenging event and the emergency services together with partner agencies have worked hard throughout the night and will continue to do so to respond to calls from the public.

"Police are advising residents to take all possible precautions to protect their property. Please listen to your local radio and monitor social media for weather updates.

"Additionally, if you have to travel please plan your journey and allow extra time. Please drive to the road conditions and do not drive into flood water."
