Cornwall counts cost after night of storms which brought flooding and devastation

Cornwall is waking up this morning to assess the damage left by a storm which had every river in the Duchy on flood alert and caused many villages and town to flood overnight.

The River Fowey and River Cober are still on high flood alert.

Up to 100 homes have been flooded in the worst-hit places, particularly on the south coast of Cornwall.

Last night Cornwall Council set up a control centre at Truro's County Hall to provide a coordinated response to the crisis.

Helston, Polperro, Mevagissy, Millbrook and Torpoint were the focus of emergency services attention during the evening, with Newlyn and Lostwithiel adding to that list during the night as the tide rose.

Rest centres in various towns were set up, St John’s Hall in Penzance, the Guildhall in Helston, the Methodist Church in Millbrook and Mevagissy School.

Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service have been inundated with over 350 various incidents from yesterday afternoon to 6am this morning.

Resources from every station within the county have been involved.

The incidents that Cornwall Fire and Rescue have attended were classified as 'Life Risk' and crews also assisted in major pumping out of properties which were severely flooded.

The High Volume Pump was mobilised to Perranporth to assist in removing a large volume of water from surrounding properties.

There is an ongoing flooding incident at Trenear, Helston, with several properties suffering severe flooding. Some residents were evacuated.

Crews from Helston, Camborne and Mullion have been in attendance and are using three pumps to remove water from the scene.

There are reports of residents on higher ground taking in flood-stricken neighbours.

Truro_Kerbow commented "We have taken people in for the night. Their places are flooded and no sign of any official help. Fortunately we are higher up and safe."

Chris Jones sent in a picture of a tree which had fallen onto a car at St Columb Minor near Newquay. He said "A lady was inside the car when the tree fell. She was unharmed but very shaken up."

The major trunk road out of Cornwall, the A30, is closed in both directions at Bodmin due to debris on the road.

There is flooding on the A30 near Victoria, the A39 at Devoran, the A387 at Polperro, The A394 at Helston, the A3058 at Summercourt, the A3059 at St Columb Minor, the A3071 at St Just and the A3075 at Goonhavern.

Numerous minor roads across the county remain impassable and emergency services will be working down through these once the major routes are cleared.

First Great Western train services are still unable to travel into and out of Devon and Cornwall due to flooding between Taunton and Exeter.
