Cornwall equestrianism by Kathryn Pearn October 30
FOUR Cornish showjumpers took centre stage at the star-studded British Showjumping Awards Ball held at the Hilton Metropole in Birmingham where the guest list included the world number one ranked rider Ben Maher and the GB Olympic and European gold winning team manager Rob Hoekstra.
Rubbing shoulders with British Showjumping's elite as winners of the Equestrian Life South West league were Gwendra Pearce of Helston; Lauren Perham of Redruth; Caitlin Roskilly of Penzance; Kathy Berryman of Falmouth and Celena Wolfe of Bodmin.
A champagne reception set the scene for this glitzy evening with Club League winners from all over the country mingling amongst a sea of famous faces. The Cornish contingent took full advantage to chat to the host of celebrities before enjoying a super dinner and dancing into the early hours to the Chip Shop Boys.
"It was a fantastic night," said Gwendra, winner of the horse 70cm Club League with the super coloured mare Carnview Stella. "The evening took on the atmosphere of the Sport Personality of the Year and we were lucky to have a front row table."

Kathy Berryman clinched a winning double in the 80cms and 90cms Club Leagues with her 15hh, 14 year-old Connemara x thoroughbred mare Kerry Gold II.
The night proved just the right tonic for Kathy who recently broke her collar bone and is just returning to the saddle.
"We compete mainly at Colraine Equestrian Centre, Truro, and signed up for the BS Club membership a couple of years ago. It's a brilliant initiative and this is the second year I've topped the leagues and been invited to the ball to accept our awards. My mother came along with me this time and it was a fabulous night out for us both. I'm hoping that Colraine will continue with the club shows as it gives us all something to aim for."
Celena Wolfe from Bodmin clinched the one metre league with her super consistent gelding Tober Dubalay. This lovely grey has been a match made in heaven for Celena who has produced him from a raw youngster with tremendous success.
"One of the highlights of the evening was meeting the World number one, Ben Maher and our GB Performance Manager, Rob Hoekstra," said Celena who was joined at the ball by her partner Jonathan Weaving.
Teenagers, Caitlin Roskilly and Lauren Perham were clearly impressed with the high profile occasion.
Fourteen year-old Caitlin, who is a pupil at Cape Cornwall School, claimed the 70cms pony league with her 19 year-old campaigner Rialton Dresden Rose.
"I've had Rosie for three years and we compete in all pony club activities," she said.
"We started jumping tiny cross poles and have risen up the ranks to competing over 90cms courses. As a family, we really enjoyed the ball and the chance to meet the top riders, especially Ben Maher.
"It has definitely encouraged me to compete in British Showjumping competitions and to progress as far as I can and maybe one day I'll be competing against the riders we met at the ball."
For the second successive year, Lauren landed the pony 80cms and 90cms Club League awards with her 148cms mare Dotty Delilah.
Lauren, who trains with Dominique Mills has built up a super partnership with Dotty Delilah over the past two years. The pair have also won British Showjumping's Club 80cm and one metre finals at the regionals held at Wick in Somerset where they also finished second in the 90cms championship.
"The whole experience has been fantastic from start to finish," the Cornish contingent agreed.
"The atmosphere was second to none and so full of glitz and glamour.
"It was a truly wonderful experience and we're all hoping that Colraine Equestrian Centre will continue with the club shows."
