Cornwall nursery is awarded Silver Gilt Medal at Chelsea Flower Show
After months of planning, designing, and growing, all of the hard work paid off this morning when Burncoose Nurseries received the news that they had been awarded a well deserved Silver Gilt Medal for their ‘Gardens of Cornwall – A Mining Heritage Garden’ at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
The garden, which is once again supported by Terra Firma Capital Partners, is a fusion and blending of garden styles inspired by the colours and textures of copper stained stones, minerals and mineshafts.
The garden has been designed to illustrate the historic mining heritage in Cornwall, whilst also looking to the future and the re opening of South Crofty Mine, which is scheduled to start operating again in the next three years.
Designed by Louisa Lazarowicz and Geraldine Hammond, the garden includes some rare and beautiful plant species, including a special collection of Enkianthus never seen together at Chelsea before. Also, the exciting new Zenobia pulverulenta ‘Raspberry Ripple’ features on the exhibit.

Owner of Burncoose Nurseries, Charles Williams, said “The garden this year has been inspired by the mining heritage of Cornwall and the current revival we are witnessing. I hope that visitors to the show will enjoy all of the gardens and I hope our garden will give an insight into the mining heritage of Cornwall and how the past can very easily become our future.
“We are delighted to have been awarded a Silver Gilt Medal at RHS Chelsea, The entire team has worked incredibly hard this year, battling with difficult weather conditions and balancing the timing of brining the plants on so they are at their best for the show. I’d like to thank the entire team for all of their hard work and also our sponsors, Terra Firma Capital Partners, for making the Burncoose exhibit such a success.”
This is the tenth year in which the Burncoose garden has been sponsored by Terra Firma Capital Partners, a unique private equity organisation who are also generous supporters of youth charity The Prince’s Trust.
Each year, Terra Firma uses their sponsorship at RHS Chelsea to support the work of The Prince’s Trust in changing young lives. This year, Prince’s Trust Ambassador, Actress Samantha Bond, visited the stand. Samantha, who is most well known for her role as Miss Moneypenny in three James bond films, has recently returned to the West End stage as Mrs Prentice in ‘What the Butler Saw’. Samantha said: “I'm thrilled to be representing The Prince’s Trust at Chelsea on behalf of our supporter, Terra Firma. The garden is absolutely beautiful and it is clear that the Gardens of Cornwall illustrate how the investment of time, money and effort can create something really special.
“The same ethos is reflected in the work carried out by the Prince’s Trust. The Trust works incredibly hard support young people by investing in them to help them achieve their goals in life. I think this garden shows that through grit and determination, something beautiful, satisfying and rewarding can be achieved.”
Tim Pryce, Chief Executive of Terra Firma, said he was pleased to once again support The Prince’s Trust on the Burncoose Nurseries stand, he said: “Terra Firma is committed to charitable work and is a proud supporter of The Prince’s Trust and the outstanding work they carry out.
“The Chelsea Flower Show is a great place to raise the profile of the work of The Prince’s Trust. By linking up with Burncoose Nurseries we are able to showcase very important messages and ideas that affect young people in an exciting and innovate way.”
