Council issues beach water quality warning
Cornwall Council is warning beach users to be aware of possible reduced water quality in the sea, streams and rivers across the Duchy, following last week's heavy rains.
With surface run off from agricultural land and overflow from the drainage system reducing the water quality of many streams across Cornwall, the Council's Public Health and Protection Team is also reminding bathers to be aware of the impact on the county's beaches. At Perranporth, in particular, the team is warning members of the public to avoid the two streams crossing the beach.

Rebecca Kirk, Cornwall Council's Assistant Head of Public Health and Protection, said "The quality of water in the streams that cross beaches may not be the same as the sea and freshwater streams can sometimes contain more bacteria than sea water, particularly after heavy rain."
She advised "If you come into contact with stream water, avoid hand to mouth contact and wash your hands thoroughly as soon as possible. Water users should be aware that storm water ingress into the sea can also have a detrimental effect on the quality of sea water."
