More affordable homes are not needed, say councillors
PARISH councillors are strongly objecting to plans for affordable homes they say are not needed and would overload the village's sewerage system.
Cornwall Council's east sub- area planning committee will meet at Liskeard tomorrow evening to decide on the application at North Petherwin, together with another affordable scheme at St Breward.
The development of nine affordable dwellings is on land south of Dell Meadow, Black Lane, North Petherwin, and proposed by M Williams.
The planning department is recommending approval subject to a Section 109 agreement to secure them as affordable in perpetuity.
However, there has been much local opposition, including from North Petherwin Parish Council.
At its latest meeting members pointed out that there did not appear to be a requirement for affordable houses in the area as there were several within a five-mile radius which had been on the market for some time at only £130,000 and had not been sold.
The council has also objected that the site is not within the village boundary and the access is on a bend and would be completely concealed from the view of approaching traffic.
It says four three-bedroom houses are already being built on a site opposite the proposed development plot which will bring the sewerage system to the limit of its capacity.
Moreover, the Beaumont Court Residential Care Home intends to add a nursing facility which will put additional pressure on the sewers.
"The council takes the view that this development should take precedence, as a nursing facility is urgently required to complement the care already provided," says the council.
The application for 17 dwellings at St Breward is on land east of Chyryn Drive owned by Cornwall Council.
Some would be let at affordable rents, some affordable shared ownership and some for sale on the open market.
Louise Dwelly, on behalf of the council, is applying for an extension of time on a consent granted in June 2008.
There have been no objections to the proposal.

“Clearly if there are a number of properties for sale at £130k and still people needing housing then £130k is NOT affordable !!! Perhaps all the planned new houses in both villages should be for rental at affordable levels.. easily affordable of course for those on benefits..”
