Council tax conflict
A STORM is brewing among Conservative councillors over council tax rates. Council leader Jim Currie announced that a 1.97 per cent increase in council tax bills would be needed from April to keep the books balanced at Cornwall Council in the face of cuts in government grants. But Tory group leader Fiona Ferguson is set to propose an alternative plan calling for a freeze. Mrs Ferguson said: "It is becoming more difficult to achieve no increase in council tax but we also know how difficult the financial situation is for many Cornish people."
