PLANS to force households in Cornwall to pay a minimum of 30 per cent council tax have been set back after councillors voted against the proposals. Cornwall Council is reviewing its council tax system after the Government shifted responsibility for council tax benefit onto local councils. A number of households in Cornwall are currently entitled to 100 per cent council tax benefit but officers at Cornwall Council said that if that was to remain it would require the council finding an extra £4.4 million a year. As a result they recommended that the council implement several changes to council benefit including setting a minimum charge of 30 per cent for all households. The officers had also suggested that any household which was classed as being higher than a Band D for council tax purposes should not be entitled to discount. However, the council's corporate resources overview and scrutiny committee last week recommended that the existing system should remain in place, despite the warnings of officers about the financial implications. A final decision will be made by the Cabinet next week.
