Cornwall Council to vote on new chief executive's pay
Cornwall Council could cut the salary of its new chief executive by one-fifth compared to his predecessor, the Western Morning News understands.
Councillors will today decide whether to endorse Paul Masters as the authority's most senior official on a salary of between £158,000 and £175,000.

Mr Masters, the council's assistant chief executive at present, has been lined up by a nine-person panel to take over on a temporary basis following the departure of Kevin Lavery to New Zealand.
According to Cornwall Council accounts, Mr Lavery, who guided Cornwall Council to unitary status following the abolition of six district councils, was commanding a basic annual salary of £200,000, though he volunteered for a pay cut in 2011.

The pay bracket has been scaled-back for his successor, from between £180,000 and £200,000 to between £158,000 and £175,000 – a 12% cut.
The WMN understands the salary offered will be at the bottom end of the new scale.
At £158,000, it represents a 21% cut – a reflection of the austerity hitting local authorities everywhere.
Extending the six-month appointment of Mr Masters, a long-standing public servant in Cornwall, depends on the council's elections in May.
