SENIOR councillors in Cornwall are launching a petition to scrap the controversial logo for the county's new council.

The flame-like emblem for the county's impending unitary authority has been derided since it was unveiled in June.

Opponents have compared it to the hairstyles of singer Amy Winehouse and US boxing promoter Don King, while another said it resembled "the emblem of a cattle breed society from somewhere in the Balkans".

They want the historic crest featuring a fisherman, miner and a chough to be reinstated. Now a group of independent councillors are gathering a petition to support their cause.

County councillor Julian German, who represents the Roseland, said: "We as independent councillors are just simply not prepared to sit idly by and allow our historic emblem to be ditched for an inferior logo which commands little public support.

"We feel it is crucial in a democracy that the views of the electorate are taken seriously by their elected representatives.

"This arrogant 'we know better' approach has to stop."

The move has already been supported by county councillors Colin Brewer, Armorel Carlyon, Graeme Hicks, Pam Lyne, Tony Nettle, Howard Roberts and Andrew Walters and more are expected to join their ranks.

The new logo will appear first at main council sites, leisure centres and libraries, and be changed on uniforms and corporate stationery. The final bill is estimated to reach around £476,000, taking into account the need to change the livery on all vehicles and ID cards for some 20,000 staff.

Calling it an insult that the original logo had been dropped, Coun Mark Kaczmarek said the new one "meant nothing to Cornwall".

“I dont even live in Cornwall but think the logo is awefull. Have a bit of PRIDE in yourselves and bring back the old one. After all it has served you well for many a year up to now.”

“Nearly half a million pounds for a logo! Time and effort now spent on arguing whether to use it or go back to the original one. Another example of a totally messed up system. People need to move into the 21st century. Cornwall has potential but is governed by people firmly rooted in the 1960's. The system, the councillors, the councils, the whole lot needs a radical change.”

“the traditional emblem (shield choughs miner fisherman etc ) - is decorative and says much about the county's traditions - the enforced logo says nothing - looks like it is copied from microsoft's clip art library - or is a five minute photoshop job - john , east kilbride”

“Cornwall isn't an island and last time i checked you've been part of England for well over a thousand years. I wish the Cornish would get over themselves and realise that every part of the United Kingdom has had an axe to grind with the Government at some point. Oh and another thing Cornish people, those little stick like things attached to the steering column of your car are indicators, use them!!”

“Would it not have been simpler for Cornwall County Council to have ran a prize for the new logo design, then opened it up for the public of Cornwall to have voted on the Council's website. Sounds simple to me, and cheaper than sixty grand, and better PR all round. But, then again, who said you have to have brains to make decisions in County Hall?”

“Hold on one moment - this would be the same logo that cost x-number of pounds to design and create? Someone at the council must have approved it? Obviously someone more senior than the 'elected councillors', who now want to bin the new logo in favour of the old one (Sod the fact they have used our money to pay for it all!) I think if you did a proper poll of the county, you would find more people that like it than dont. please stop harping on about it.”
