It has rained all day and well into the previous night, the river is swollen and is in danger of overflowing. Before the Colliford dam was built the Moor flooded regularly but since then it has become a rarity.
When it floods it brings down a huge quantity of leaves and debris. The leaves and the silt are a good composting agent but the seeds of the Hammer Sedge and the Flag Iris are not so welcome.
Firewood in various forms lies scattered on the grass, and a trawl usually brings a few unusual objects to the trailer.
I once found a huge yellow inflated edifice and, despite various enquiries, I never discovered the owner. After a flood the Moor is always patrolled by one or two herons.

They find frogs, dead moles and voles, which have been drowned by the rush of water, one gulp and they are gone. The leaves gradually disappear over the winter as the worms take them down to provide more compost.
Nature wastes nothing.
I have always hoped to pick up a nice salmon which had got stranded but no luck so far – perhaps I have always been too late!
There is always the probability of a whole tree lying in a retrievable position but now that the tractor has gone the economics of the operation makes it less viable. Retirement brings its problems.
