Western Morning News

In a lifetime of fishing a few unusual things have happened. Take the salmon and the tailer episode. Whilst approaching a pool from the downstream end I noticed a peculiar ripple on the surface of the pool which was moving erratically. Taking a closer look I could see that it was the cork handle of a tailer waving from side to side. The tailer is a device which superceded the gaff hook for securing and lifting the fish from the water when it had been played out. However this tailer was still attached to a fish. Someone had tailed the fish but had probably slipped on the bank or bed of the river and lost hold of the tailer. The trick now was how to get hold of the tailer and secure the fish. I tied on the largest lure in the tacklebox which had two large treble hooks attached. Casting ahead of the tailer main body I hoped to hook the spring wire which "might" let the hook slide down and jam.

After a few casts it worked exactly as hoped but as I landed the fish the Head Bailiff Mr Henwood, (now deceased) arrived. He was a bit suspicious and asked me why I carried a net and a tailer? I replied that I was actually fishing for Sea Trout but just brought the tailer along "just in case", I was hoping that he would not notice the large spinner with treble hooks which would have given the game away big time but he turned and walked off. Sweat over!
