Whilst fishing one day from Helland Bridge down stream, by kind permission of Col Peter-Hoblyn of Colquite, the water suddenly took on a milky hue caused by a spill, or by intent, from the clay works at Wenford.
As I was looking at this white water and wondering if it was any use carrying on, the Water Bailiff appeared, a Mr Ede, Reg to all his friends, so I asked him if it was safe to fish.
"Well, yes," he said. "But you will need the right minnow". Sensing a con, I naively asked, "and what may that be?" Reg immediately produced an old tobacco tin filled with minnows all painted white with red spots all over the body. "This is what you need my son, specially made for the white water." The minnows looked so ludicrous but was there a chance that they would work?
"Would you sell me one, Reg?" I asked and he rapidly replied, "Yes and they are £1 each." Now that was a lot to pay for a minnow as I used to make all my own for coppers from half inch lead gas pipe, but passing over my pound made me the proud possessor of the white and red spotted monster. I fitted it with a mount and started fishing again. Immediately I was into a fish.

Now, was it a con that had gone wrong or was it a genuine deal? We shall never know, but I have my suspicions!
