Western Morning News

During the 1970s I was employed by the National Trust as the Head of the Coastal Wardens dept, Cornwall area. In my wandering around the coastal footpaths many free meals came my way. Standing at the entrance to Porth beach I was approached by a holidaymaker holding a very large brown crab entangled in a piece of netting. He said: "I have just found this crab in a pool, what can I do with it?" No further invitation was necessary, I relieved him of the crab and into the boot of the car it went. Patrolling Rinsey Head at dead low water I noticed a crab pot complete with a long piece of rope attached washed up on to the rocks at the bottom of the cliff. I climbed down to the rocks and saw that the pot contained a live lobster so pulling the pot up above the high water mark and coiling the rope neatly on the top I removed the lobster for my salvage fee. On another occasion at Pentire farm on the North Coast we were in the process of demolishing the buildings and one of the galvanised grain stores held a flock of feral pigeons trying to get out. They had entered via a smallish hole in the netting but in their panic could not now find it. We had pigeons in pies, casseroles, whatever for weeks. Mushrooms and blewitts were to be found at the same spot each year, all made a welcome addition to the table.
