Country notebook
As a born and bred countryman there was much to interest me on the golf course between the first drive off and the final putt.
The course was a haven for rabbits, where there are rabbits there are stoats and the final squeal of bunny spelt a stoat kill. The trick was to locate the kill quickly and rabbit was on the menu the next day. The only damage to the rabbit would be a small bite mark at the base of the neck. In season there were always mushrooms, in the same place every year, one such patch held the large horse mushrooms, why they were ignored by most of the other players is a mystery. Perhaps the concentration on the game blocked out other distractions, who knows ?
One of the members, not a countryman, was particularly interested in animal droppings, I would explain the difference between fox, badger, cat, stoat and, on one occasion, an owl pellet which he took home and soaked in a saucer of water to examine the remains of the bird's last meal. There were a lot of adders which, at times, caused consternation among the ladies, so that when a ball landed in the bracken fringe it was lost. Picking an adder off the fairway and taking it back to the rough usually caused a bit of a stir.
No lady particularly wanted to venture into the jungle to retrieve a ball, especially if they were wearing shorts! Happy days cut short by failing legs (and eyesight) at the age of 87. A good innings.
