Couple host major music gig in their own terraced house
A HEAMOOR couple was given £200 for alcohol and food by mobile phone giant Orange to host a gig in their tiny two-up, two-down terraced house on Saturday.
The music of Cornish bands 'I Say Marvin', 'Hedluv' and 'Sycamores' pulsed from Jackie and Colin Stringer's living room until 1.30am.
The event was the first in a month-long series of house party gigs to be broadcast on the Orange website and on My Space.
Hosted by London-based music artist Jont, the series sees the 'Orange Unlit' tour hit the road and host an array of different bands at people's homes, from terraced town houses to swanky mansions.
Sponsored by Orange, the gigs go out afterwards on the Orange website and on MySpace. There are currently taster clips of the event on the web, and the main feature was expected out by today.
Orange Unlit was hatched 10 years ago when creator Jont played a gig at a friend's house and opened up the doors to everyone.
Jackie said: "Saturday night was really, really wonderful. It was much more than I was expecting. I thought it would be just one person doing it all but they came into the house and put up web cameras. There were two cameramen and a sound man.
"They even put up signs on the front and back doors saying 'Monkey Productions filming here tonight'.
"They were so pleasant and they just took over the house, but they did it brilliantly."
Jackie's bedroom was turned into an editing suite for the evening, and her daughter Alice, 20, was thrilled when her room was used to interview the bands.
More than 50 of Jackie's friends and family helped get the party going, which started at 7.30pm and didn't finish until 1.30am. "It was a real squeeze but it was brilliant. It even stopped raining so we could go in the back yard for a bit," said Jackie.
Jont ended up being backed by the others bands as he did his set towards the end of the night. An extract from the MySpace Orange Unlit page reads: "Unlit is about the audience, it's about the venue – and it's all about the bands that come and play. It's about everyone coming together and sharing a unique experience."
The Heamoor gig marks the first of the series' tour of the UK, with the crew heading to Norwich for their next destination. Two house party gigs a week will be filmed between now and September 13.
There is even talk of the series being sold on to a TV production company, so the Stringers' house could have yet more fame to come.
Jackie applied to host the gig after seeing an advert in The Guardian newspaper. It can be seen on the website www.i-am-everyone.co.uk/orangeunlit
