Love is in the air, with Valentine's Day just a week away.

But love is always in the air at the Mid Cornwall School of Jewellery, where Lisa Cain has spent ten years teaching couples to make their own wedding rings.

Since her first course, in February 2001, almost 150 couples from a diverse range of backgrounds and professions have crafted unique rings in silver, white gold, yellow gold and platinum.

"We've taught people from all walks of life: Olympic luge riders, dog trainers and forensic scientists," says Lisa.

"What they all have in common is that they want a more personal experience. They want to be in control of as much of their wedding day as possible: they're adventurous, enthusiastic, and very much in love."

On the one-day course each couple work on a one-to-one basis in Lisa's bright, purpose-built workshop to produce a unique piece of jewellery.

"Working in silver, I first show them each stage of the production process before they replicate it with their own wedding ring. I must be the only person in the world who has made and owns nearly 150 wedding rings but has never got married!"

Traditionally, the bride makes the groom's ring and vice versa: "My students will hopefully wear their wedding rings every day for the rest of their lives. This can make some couples look slightly nervously at first, but once finished they're always delighted with the result.

"What we offer that traditional jewellers don't is complete exclusivity. The ring is made by you, to your specifications – from the size to the design to the finish.

Despite nearly 300 happy customers, Lisa is yet to have a return customer.

"And that's the way I want it to stay," she quickly adds.
