FIREFIGHTERS spent the night tackling a blaze at Falmouth Docks, with crews from five fire stations rallying to put out the flames.
The fire broke out in a three-storey building in Pendennis Shipyard shortly after 2am and was found to be well alight upon the arrival of the first fire crews.

Firefighters called for immediate back-up and appliances from Falmouth, Truro, Redruth, Helston and Perranporth were soon on the scene,
The fire is believed to have started on the first floor of the building, which is used for general refitting, workshops, paint store and also contains a spray booth.
Between three and seven fire crews searched the first floor using breathing apparatus and five main jets were used to quell the flames.
The brigade's aerial ladder platform was used to remove outersheets from the building.
The seat of the fire was located by 5.23am and all the utilities had been disconnected.
50 brigade crew were still at the scene of the fire throughout the early morning, but have since extinguised the flames.

“I was talking to a Falmouth fireman the other day who informed me that the fire service don't even own their own fire station. Apparently due to cutbacks the building was sold to some huge property management company and the fire service now rent it! The terms of the lease state that all necessary repairs must be done by said management co. at extortionate rates. One job in particular was mentioned and their quoted price was 10 times what I would have quoted, (I'm in the building trade) hence these repairs don't get done. How long before our fire services are run into the ground financially due to lack of government funding??”

“No, Trevor, they don't want to close Falmouth Fire Station, they just want to make it less efficient by withdrawing 24 hour cover. The docks incident proves that they are wrong. They must find other ways of saving money, such as cutting down on their enormous expenses claims.”
