'Crunch time' for bid to save community hall
Next week marks "crunch time" for campaigners trying to save a beloved community hall, with two important meetings which could help determine its future.
The Friends of Elizabeth Hall have adopted a two-pronged attack to try to stop the facility being sold to developers to fund the regeneration of the seafront in Exmouth, East Devon.
Their main goal is to persuade East Devon District Council (EDDC) to keep it on, and on Wednesday evening they will submit a petition bearing 12,000 names calling for it not to be sold, of which more than 7,000 are said to be local residents.
But, in case that fails, they are also planning to submit a bid to buy the hall themselves, but would need support from Exmouth Town Council. On Monday evening, they will present their case to members. But Jilly Green, of Friends of Elizabeth Hall, is expecting an uphill battle at both meetings.

She said: "Some people may think we're trying to back too many horses by taking both approaches, but we're doing whatever we can to save the hall.
"We're expecting EDDC to tear our petition to bits. We think they will pick up on any little mistake to cross names off."
An EDDC spokesman confirmed the cabinet would receive the report and hear a presentation on Wednesday.
