Curfew for kids
A PIONEERING night curfew is to be introduced in Redruth later this month as community leaders try to build on the good work already done to reduce anti social behaviour in the town.
Operation Goodnight will ask parents to ensure their 16-year-olds are off the streets by 9pm and under 10s are at home by 8pm in the Close Hill area.
The aim is to reduce the risk of them becoming victims of crime or being offenders themselves.
The voluntary scheme, which will run from Friday, July 25, until Sunday, September 7, is being introduced by Redruth's neighbourhood police team working with the support of other agencies and residents.
Neighbourhood beat manager PC Marc Griffin said: “For many months, residents who have attended the Partners and Communities Together meetings have expressed concern over ongoing reports of children as young as eight being out, unsupervised, late into the night.
“It is a fact that young people are at an increased risk of becoming either a victim or offender of crime and or anti social behaviour if left unsupervised during the evenings.
“The spirit of this scheme is not about restricting what our young people can and cannot do but making certain that during the summer holiday evenings they are able to enjoy themselves but not at the expense of the wider community.
“A number of diversionary activities will be put in place, including football coaching sessions organised by the Fire Brigade as well events being planned by Redruth North Partnership.”
Multi-agency patrols will take place in the area at night with parents and carers contacted about children out after the curfew time.
If it is felt a child remains vulnerable, referrals will be made to the appropriate agencies.
Redruth North was the subject of a dispersal order last winter and one major conclusion that came from that initiative was that residents believed parents were not taking responsibility for their children.
Operation Goodnight is being supported by Redruth North Partnership, Redruth Town Council, Redruth North PACT panel, Kerrier District Council's Anti Social Behaviour Team, the Fire Brigade and Coastline Housing.
Julian Commons, anti social behaviour coordinator for West Cornwall, said: “This scheme is a way that parents can work together with agencies in their local communities to keep their children safe and prevent them from possibly being at risk of being a victim or possibly an offender of crime or anti social behaviour.
“While we acknowledge that the vast majority of parents are extremely responsible, we need to encourage all parents to take responsibility for their children so that the community is a safer place for everyone who lives there.”

“This is a historic day in the history of freedom- for the first time in over 50 years the government has decided to enforce a curfew. Who is the enemy? There are millions of them, all waiting on street corners to stab you, shoot you and steal your ipod. But this time, it is not SS troops and Nazi spies, but the future taxpayers, politicians, doctors and dentists. The world is in uproar over Zanu-pf's stolen election, but while there is Gordon telling us of the evil of Zimbabwe, they plan to enforce the reppression of millions of young people. Previously I have been a labour defender, but this ageism has finally turned me to the yellow side of the parliament. Discrimination is a ugly word, but then you punish the many on the sins of the few, the words to use are not powerful enough.”

“We should be applauding the fact that community leaders in Redruth are prepared to make a stand to put right some of the social problems in the town. Yes, it is only a small minority of youngsters causing this trouble, but they cause a vast majority of good, honest people in the area to think twice before venturing out at night, AND THIS IS WRONG! We should be supporting, not criticising people for taking steps to reverse this trend of thuggery and intimidation. How long before we start to get reports of knife crime on the same scale as larger cities if we dont do something about this problem? A lot of these so called 'Redruth Gangsters' refer to themselves as "soldiers on da front line". How pathetic!! I dont remember seeing any of them stood by my shoulder during my tours of Iraq and Afghanistan. Put them in that situation and they are so far out of their comfort zone, they would fall apart. And to all parents.....do you know what your child is doing tonight?”

“Police state : I assume that the Police will stop and question anyone they think is 16. You will be required to answer their questions. Failure to do so will be obstruction. ( thats one right gone for everyone ) Failure to cooperate will result in arrest - then finger printing - then DNA samples will be taken.
Some bright spark will then suggest some form of ID card, of course failure to carry one or produce it will be in itself an offence.
Because of a few troublesome kids - your rights -YES YOUR RIGHTS - are being taken away.
If the Police did their job with existing powers and provision was made for young people this curfew would not be needed.
I would like to bet that on the day this comes in Police will be everywhere - they will throw addition funds at this to show how effective a curfew is. The same funds and effort would be just as effective spent on working with the youth without us all giving up more of our freedoms.”

“I wish the agencies involved the best of luck with this. Its a brave move and I hope they havent bitten off more that they can chew. Im concerned about the possible broad brush involved here for the majority of good kids. But to hear about people pulling together to make these few destructive children and their hopeless parents accountable for once gives you hope for a better town for all of us. Well done and good luck.”

“Well, i dont know what to say really as both sides of this argument have good points, how is soceity going tp pin point the bad eggs to the good eggs? its not fair ALL teenagers should suffer for somes misbehaviour, but something needs to be done countywise so cornwall doesnt end up like the likes of birmingham and london subject to our children getting shot or stabbed.”

“When will people start to realise that not all teenagers are the same? No wonder they are growing up with an attitude problem when everyone believes anyone under the age of 20 to be a hoodie wearing drug-taking yob. Admittedly there are groups of very unpleasant youngsters, mainly from families that dont give a damn, but dont paint them all with the same brush. Its about time people tried to see the good in kids - they are not all bad. After all, society has made them what they are, so I think we can all be held responsible to a certain degree.”

“Personally I think that about 90% of teenagers are a waste of time. I think that all kids should be vetted from the age of about 10 and if they are showing signs of being troublesome, removed from society until they are mature and well behaved enough to be released back among us decent folk. This in my opinion would gradually remove all the rotten apples and after a couple of generations there would be no crime. The best idea would be to sterilise certain adults to prevent them from reproducing carbon copies of themselves in the first place. Some people should just NOT be allowed to have kids, full stop.”
