Cyclist in serious condition after collision with van on A30

“I have to strongly agree that the main A roads with 60-70mph limits should be a big no no for cyclists as the motorways are in this country.

As a witness and, with my buddy, the 1st on the scene I have seen the devastation a van can do to the human body. Holding a guys head together is not a pleasant thing!!
I can tell you that the cyclist was NOT at fault but I do have to question his judgement on using that as his route to/from work. Not 5 miles before we had seen another cyclist nearly wiped out by a lorry as he cycled across the end of a slip road!!
We were on our penultimate day of a 3000+ mile charity challenge around the GB coastline with a runner, cyclist & a triple amputee handcyclist and we had to change our route many times due the these sort of roads we believed to be too dangerous to travel on!! The whole Tour de Forces team wish the cyclist a speedy recovery especially myself (Sean) & Chunks and our thoughts are with him and his family.

@NMGCza: the weather was overcast and it wasn't raining when the incident happened, the road was damp but in no way was it dangerous. If you were seconds after this then you would know this and my question would by 'why didn't you stop?' We were travelling in the opposite direction, stopped about 250-300 yards up the road, ran back and were still the 1st to the cyclist. In fact there was nearly 3 crashes right by us due to idiot drivers and it wasn't until a lorry driver covered the inside lane that we felt safe trying to save the mans life!!”

“Thoughts are with both the cyclist, and the van driver. Yesterday morning was hazardous on that stretch of road, torrential rain and strong winds. I passed seconds afterwards and saw the carnage. I agree with Cknocker, something needs to be done if vehicles and cyclists are to use the A30 together safely.”

“What I can't get my head around is why cyclists are permitted on the A30, I know two people who have been killed on the Camborne-Redruth Bypass, both killed while cycling over a slip road with the merging traffic taking them out.
The dual sections of the A30 have a 70mph limit - the same as a motorway - without a hard shoulder, yet cyclists are not permitted on motorways, so why are they permitted on this road?
The single carriageway sections have a different problem, with cyclists holding up the traffic and traffic taking hazardous overtaking manoeuvres to get around them.”

“Another incident on the A30, 5 and counting within in the space of two mouths. Something drastically needs doing, more police patrolling the route and speed enforcement cameras, else its going to be another family being told they have lost a loved one. Hope the cyclist pulls through.”
