A DJ from Falmouth who has made a full recovery after being diagnosed with cancer four years ago is to run 10,000 metres for charity.

Scott Ashworth was told he had testicular cancer when he was just 21. He thought his excruciating back pain was nothing more than a strain.

"I didn't assume it could be anything as bad as it was," he said.

"I thought I had a bit of a swollen testicle that was going to go away."

However, only days after seeing a consultant he underwent the first of two operations and then underwent three cycles of chemotherapy.

Scott, who lives at Maen Valley, has now been given the all-clear, but has to undergo regular check-ups.

"It probably happened at the best time for me," said Scott.

"I didn't have a family to support and no mortgage to pay."

It was his own brush with cancer, and being inspired by his girlfriend, Janine Oates, that has led to Scott signing up for Cancer Research UK's Run 10K fund-raiser.

"Janine did the 5K Race for Life at Eden earlier this summer and that has inspired me," said Scott.

The 24-year-old had intended to join the rest of the 10K runners at Lanhydrock on Sunday but can no longer do so because of work commitments.

Determined to complete the run, however, Scott will now be taking to a treadmill at Maen Valley instead of enjoying the more scenic route around the National Trust estate.

Scott will have some extra obstacles to overcome, however.

He expects to be up until 3am on Saturday, as he has a wedding to DJ for, and then will provide the music at another reception on Sunday night.

As well as running Party Night Disco, Scott also hosts an internet radio show for Off the Chart Radio, and will be helping host the daytime entertainment at the Events Square during the Tall Ships regatta.

Scott hopes his voluntary work with the internet radio station will get him noticed and lead to bigger and better things.
