The Cornishman

Nickname: Red Mullet

DOB: 28-3-54

Birthplace: Penzance

Occupation: Toolmaker/machinist

Earliest sporting memory: Fishing with my father at the age of 8 on the River Loddon, a tributary of the Thames. A gudgeon was my first fish and I still have the fishing rod.

Best sporting memory: Catching the British, Channel Island and Guernsey Shore Record baillon's wrasse in 2000. It was only 5oz 10drms, but quadrupled the existing record.

Worst sporting memory: I caught my first weighable Gilthead Bream in 2010 but the worst memory is losing one twice the size a week later.

Ultimate ambition in sport: To catch a thick lip mullet while fly fishing and to encourage as many youngsters as possible to take up sea angling for as long as I can.

Who is your sporting idol? Chris Clark, World Champion shore angler, one of the greatest sea anglers I have had the privilege to call a friend. He continues to succeed both while fishing and as a contributor for Angling Press.

Favourite hobby away from sport: Listening to music and I read a lot, my favourite author is Stephen King but I am currently reading The Three Musketeers by Alexander Dumas.

I love Cornwall because ... It has everything I need – plenty of fish, decent weather (most of the time) fantastic fishing venues and wonderful wildlife that many that do not fish ever see.

Who would you most like to be stranded on a desert island with? It would have to be Cap'n Keast from Newlyn as he can make anything out of anything.

Most embarrassing sporting memory? Catching nothing when I fished the NFSA Guernsey Championship Final in 1989. I had a fantastic time there and been going to Guernsey for annual holidays ever since, so it did not put me off. I have made some wonderful friends and caught many good fish out there.

A perfect day out would involve... A hot sunny day with shoals of mullet, mackerel and garfish swimming around in front of me.

What music album is in your car stereo now? Pink Floyd's "The Wall"

Who would you most like to meet? David Attenborough.

What is your biggest claim to fame? Fishing with World Champions Chris Clark and Alan Yates.

Favourite sporting venue? Anywhere between Mousehole and Porthcurno.

What would be the first thing you would buy if you won the lottery? A minibus for my juniors, it would make our junior competitions and trips so much easier.

If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be? My age, so that I am younger and can do it all again.

One item you could not live without?: My spectacles.

Favourite kids' TV show? Well it may not be considered just a children's programme now, but it would have to be Doctor Who.
