The switch-on of the lights is one of a number of events kicking off the pre-Christmas shopping season in Penzance on Saturday, November 30.
A Christmas Farmers’ Market will take place all day from 10am in the centre of town in the area around the Greenmarket, the bottom of Causewayhead and Market Square.
The Greenmarket will also see Father Christmas arrive in the afternoon while, for children waiting for his arrival, there will be a carousel and face-painting by Heart FM’s Angels.
Across the road in Causewayhead a team from Pirate FM will be entertaining shoppers outside Causewayhead Furnishings and there will be entertainment all afternoon both outside the London Inn and the Humphry Davy statue; if you fancy sending your own hand-made Christmas cards this year, there is also a design workshop being held at the Exchange gallery in the afternoon.
Penzance mayor Phil Rendle – with the help of The Cornishman Christmas card competition winner will switch the all-new LED Christmas lights, starting at the Wharfside shopping centre at 4.15pm; he will then move on to the town Christmas tree by the Humphry Davy statue at 4.30pm before his final port of call in Causewayhead at 5pm.
